Description
The word ‘Chidambaram’ is derived from the word chit, meaning consciousness, and ambaram, meaning ‘sky’, put together. It is chith + aakasam, or the sky of consciousness. According to all the Vedas and scriptures, chithaakasam is the final destination that every Hindu should attempt to attain. Ambalam can also be taken to mean a ‘stage’ for performing arts. The supreme bliss or Ananda Nadanam (Cosmic Dance) of Lord Nataraja is performed in this holy place. The cosmic Dance of Lord Nataraja symbolises the ‘Motion of the Universe’ as sustained by Lord Siva. Sri Natarajamoorthi is blissfully dancing on the pranava peedam. Behind this posture of Sri Nataraja is the secret of Chidambaram-the Chidambara Rahasyam. Beyond the curtain are golden leavers of vilva (Aegle Marmelos) tree, signifying the eternal presence of Lord Siva in a formless state, the profound philosophical interpretation that the blossoming divine light could be identified and enjoyed only with divine wisdom.
